Northern Spotlight

Write for us

Northern Spotlight welcomes clear, original pitches about northern landscapes, buildings, place names, local histories and regional life. Send proposals through the Contact page, with enough detail for us to judge the subject, scope and approach before any draft is written.

What makes a good pitch

Start with one specific question or feature, then say what a reader will understand by the end. Explain the proposed angle, the likely structure and the material you would use to support factual claims. A pitch about one street's changing name, for example, is more workable than a general account of northern identity.

Useful contributions

We consider reported explainers, histories grounded in documented material, visual readings of buildings and landscapes, and careful essays about language or regional customs. We value precise scope, plain English, fair context and a willingness to distinguish what is known from what is inferred. Do not present speculation as fact or claim access, expertise or first-hand observation you do not have.

Sending a proposal

Use the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Include a working title, a short summary, your proposed category and a few lines about relevant experience or sources. Do not send confidential material or a complete article unless it has been requested. A proposal is not a promise of publication.

Our point of view

A place is more than its view

We look for the clues in the ground, the built forms and the words people use. Small details can make a familiar place easier to read.
